My Dads new shop
« on: December 19, 2019, 08:01:07 AM »
My Dad has been a life long automobile mechanic. The last 22 years he has been self employed in a shop he and I started. After a few years as partners I split off to pursue other intrest and venues. I still would hire out mechanic jobs as a side line, and use his shop.
Last April the owner of the building sold out (hes in his late 70's so we new it was coming).
The new owners plan was to bulldoze the building and develop the lot, along with the next door lot.
So by the end of May, all my dads stuff is sitting on trailers in his yard ( car lifts take up alot of trailers).
He could not find a new shop that was suitable for his needs, or had a reasonable rent rate, so he spiraled into a depression. A month ago, him and my Mom decided to move closer to my family, as I have their only grandchildren.
We spent 2 weekends moving most everything to my yard. He was going to try to find a building in my town, but same scenario as his town. In frustration fueled by depression he told me "Just sell all this crap!"

Fast forward to last weekend, I run into a cement contractor friend and on a whim, I ask him if he can pour me a 30' x 60' slab on my property. (Excellent road frontage on a fairly busy road a mile outside the C/L)
Long story short, Im waiting on the bank to give me the green light, and we will start on another shop building adventure!
My dads spirt has been lifted, and they have found a house very close to mine. If the good Lords willing, he will be back in operation by spring!

Good work in every aspect.
You are another example of how we should all work with each other to make our world a better place.

If I was a little closer, I would send your dad all of my car repairs to your place.  Hard to find a good reasonable priced mechanic today!
Good luck on your new venture! :1rij:

Well we already hit a snag. Even tho I have delt with this same bank for near 17 years, and I have 75% colateral to front, they want to stick me with a high intrest loan for 36 months max. The loan officer said my payments would be near $500 a month  :a102:

So..... Im going to check with another bank right after the new year.

I have built metal buildings in the past, so fabing the structure will be done by me, Pops, my oldest son and my
best friend.
I called the metal supply shop, and I can get all the red iron, and roof tin for right at $4000.
I do work regularly for a man who has a small mountain of very decent used R-panel. He is willing to trade mechanic work for building materials.
There's a roll up door factory in Houston that sells doors direct; they quoted me doors for about 25% cheaper than anyone else, so a trip to H-town is in my future (about a7 hr turn around)

Me and the boy cut and cleared about a dozen small trees this afternoon; then measured and marked the corners.
We did some studying from several directions, and did some tweeking. Prayer fully we will be starting work by the second week of January.

A few more bucks from Santa got thrown in the kitty.
Its starting to look like I might not need as big of a loan as I thought.
I have been gifted a car that I will flip after a few minor repairs, and a small mountain of scrap has been sorted and prepared for a "junkie run"!
Things are progressing nicely. :72:

When reality sets in, it's always a slow process to get things done. It was once said " Good things come to those who wait". Well played Jake, well played.

Quick update, as soon as the weather dries out a bit, the concrete crew will frame and pour.
I have fixed 3 tractors for a man who has some extremely good used tin, and I have swapped labor for materials.
DCBI in Houston (3 hours south of me) has given me a lose quote on roll up doors that have beaten the competitors by 20% plus!!! A trip to H town may be in my near future. (BTW I may make a weekend out of it and do some surf casting)
On a different note, for those of you who live near a Lowes, you can buy one time use, 10% off coupons for less than 3$ on Ebay. When the time comes to wire in the breaker box, I will be taking advantage of this deal!!!!
Stay tuned for more updates, and hopefully some pictures.

Not being wise in all of the ways of the world, I was trying to figure out what surf casting is. I assume that it is shore fishing?

yep, into the ocean, or in the finger lakes I have seen the surf get like the ocean on a normal day... 3 -5 foot waves... but mostly ocean fishing.

The rain has slacked off enough the the contractor had time to get caught up.
A few days ago they built the pad, and will try to have cement poured by next weekend.
Lets pray this weather holds out long enough though!!

Pictures will be along soon.

So the concrete crew came by and leveled and built the forms.
The foreman said they would be back Monday to tie the rebar, and pour Tuesday morning.
