Carport Project

Mentioned in my intro I was building a carport. I've never had shelter for a vehicle, always seamed like a waste of shop space.
This started as working on the thumb of the excavator and morphed to this.
Started out liberating a pine tree that blew over on some crown land behind me.
My little tractor wouldn't lift it on the forks
Got 2 6x10s and 2 3x6s from that log

Nice log there!  Saw a logging truck on the outskirts of Houston the other day, had several logs that I swear were in the 30" range.  That is very rare for the Houston area.  Most if not all of the virgin forest in that area is gone now days!

Then the dirt work started.
Where the piles were to go we hit so much rock we ended up with a trench. Took 5 tri axle loads to fill it back in.
While we were at it we widened the drive, made a turn around and created Lake Saddie

Nothing virgin left here, but still lots of big stuff around. I can saw 30 inch in my mill, this one was about 26 at the but if I remember.
The big ones are a bugger to roll on the bunks though. Had to wrap a chain around this one and roll it with the loader to get the second and third cuts.

Next was a bit of whittling.
I modified an electric chainsaw to make cross cuts and do tenons up to 12 inches.
The excavator wasn't doing anything so they brought it back to stand the cants
Going to sheet the roof with 1x4 tongue and groove i milled from 1x10 I sawed last summer.
Made a bed for the dog in the process.

Cool!  Wish I had a excavator about that size for around my place.

Perfect sized machine for this sort of work and the zero swing makes it good around buildings. I get Kelly out of quite a few binds, wouldn't let me pay for the machine, wouldn't even let me cover the cost of the fill that he had to pay for. Great to have friends like him.

Yes the princess knows how to get comfortable, usually right where you want to be.

What kind of saw mill is that?
That cart with the milled logs is confusing the heck out of me. The steering wheel looks like it is slanted perpendicular to the direction.

I built the mill a few years ago Jeff. Has a little Isuzu diesel I salvaged, the wheels the blade runs on were salvaged from oilfield pump jacks, guess most of it was salvage. Completely manual operation but saws all I need. Made a shingle cutting attachment for it and cut what seamed like 9 million cedar shingles to sheet the shop.
The yard vehicle was my version of a military vehicle called a mule. The original was made by Willies that built the Jeep. This one is 2 wd using the hydrostatic rear end from a Cub Cadet tractor driven by a 14hp Chinese Honda clone. Gets used steady.

That mule is handy for your heavy timber projects. Turned out really nice Greg.

Finished up the final touches on the carport. Finished shingling the cable ends today. Had to cut more shingles the other day, ran out half way through.
Looking forward to not scraping ice off the truck this winter.
