Great source for material and tooling
« on: October 27, 2019, 05:57:05 PM »
Guys I know there’s been talk on various threads here about where to buy stock for machining at a decent prices.   I’m kind of excited as I came across what looks to be an awesome resource.  Place called Xometry.com.     So I have not actually used them yet but I did go to their website looked for some 6061 aluminum stock I need for making my pistol grips.   I wanted 5/16” x2” but they only had 3/8”x 2”
So I went up a size to a 3/8x2”x72”L stick is $16.88 With FREE SHIPPING.
For reference McMaster Carr price for the same stick of material is $36.09
By my math that’s less than half the price never mind shipping.
I may be missing something but I figured give it a shot and placed an order.   will report back when my stuff comes.

I discovered them about a month ago.  Their aluminum prices are down right reasonable.  A LOT cheaper than all of them sellers on eBay trying to make a killing off of the same stuff!
I'm thinking about ordering some disks in diameters of 5", 8" and at one 10" OD by 1" thick to use as fixture plates on my rotary tables.  If I do, I'll let everyone know my experience buying from them.  They also offer tooling, I didn't look at any of it.   :72:

I just took a look, seems they only sell 6061-T6 aluminum, but their prices do look to be half that of the other places I order let alone shipping cost.
I'll definitely be watching to see how your purchase turns out.

Yea only aluminum for now and I think 6’ lengths so it can ship ups.    Hope its not just a temporary loss leader deal to gain publicity.
It looks like they are first and foremost a broker for outsourcing 3D printing, machining,  sheet metal  work and what not.   Their internet based middle man business model is becoming more and more popular.    Another one is 3D Hubs.
I have the 2 sticks unbound so we’ll see.

I noticed the shopping cart buttons are pretty picky as to how you input the lengths and other variables.  I found the length should be input in inches whole numbers only then click 0“ on the drop down for the fractions of an inch.  Not the best e-commerce execution thats for sure .   McMaster is still the gold standard

Did you try inputting the desired length in inches ?
I had the same issue until I read the small print that all measurements had to be in inches even though it looks like a foot box and an inch box on the order form.
Worked just fine for me when I entered 24  instead of 2 so I'm guessing they have a minimum length requirement even though I didn't see one listed.

Anyone else having any luck ordering from this place ?
Last time I was checking prices, I was able to get price and add to cart even without an account. Tonight I created an account, but can't get any prices or get it in my cart.

Wanted to let everyone know.
After I created an account last night, I got an email this morning from them with an extra 15% off code.
Lowest price I've seen for the aluminum they sell, free shipping, and now an additional 15% off.
I was going to hold off on ordering, but now I might have to go ahead and order.

I ended up not ordering yet. I needed to be sure of the sizes I needed to order for the project I needed it for.
Too many other things/projects going on currently to figure it out. I just hope they don't change and start charging for shipping, raise their prices, or both before I can.
I did miss the 15% off, offer expired after a week.
