I finally got my 14" Rockwell lathe running. Took me about two years to rebuild.
I'm going to try to attach a film strip of it running, I'm not sure what the size limit is of a film strip. May have to link it to a posting service. Just have to see here.
Looks like I may have to tear down the Reeves variable speed drive and do something different to quieten down the awful noise coming from the transmission. The headstock seems to be okay, even though there is a gear with a bad tooth, I can live with it. The back gear, which was repaired by the previous owner, has three or four teeth that had been fixed by brazing build up and re cut. They under cut the teeth too much and is very noticeable in the back gear. I don't plan on using the back gear on this lathe. I have a 15" Sheldon with a good back gear if I need a slower speed to cut at. With the VFD, I can slow it down enough to do what I need on this lathe. I'm happy with the test cuts I took and the 2 HP motor let me peel off a 1/8" deep cut in 4140 110K material without stalling! It's a keeper if I can get the drive noise tamed down.
