About 3 weeks ago I was almost certain I had the old Taiwan made 1236 sold with the plan to acquire a pre-owned Taiwan made 1340. To acquire the larger machine I had to make room in the garage, thus the 1236 had to be sold. The garage is packed with a Bridgeport, a SBL 13 x 7', the 1024 Jet, and a HF 9x20. Had 2 potential buyers, both backed out for all different reasons, consequently, as much I hated to, I, too, had back out from buying the 1340. Not being able to unload the 1236 left me no choice.

Sometime ago in preparation in the eventual quest to upgrade I bought an Aloris BXA and a few holders for the future lathe. Just as I was in conversation with the 1340 seller a couple of weeks ago, I bought a Rohm 6 inch 6J set thru to install in the 1340. Now, that all deals broke down, I decided to put some attention on the old 1236 and use these nice pieces of tooling on it.

First of, I leveled the lathe before I did any testing. I am only concerned in the taper on the normal stick out of around 2 inches of barrel for chambering. Installed the BXA and set up a holder with DCMT 32.52 and another with DCGT 32.52. Using an aluminum bar stock I fine tuned the height till I faced off a nice front with no fingernail test detectable knob.

Time to test for taper, made a few passes and measured the short stick out. Fairly straight.

Next up in a couple of days or so will be the installation of the Rohm 6 inch 6J set thru chuck

Hey Bamban,
I made an offer of the six jaw 8". He came back with a very tempting counter offer.

Cool. How much?

If I didn't have the Bison 4J combination in the the SBL 13, I might be tempted to make an offer on that 8 inch 6J.

I am just resting my double TKR, I was in the garage earlier mounted and rough adjusted the Rohm 6J.

Well, got the Rohm mounted, zeroed the run out and made one test pass on the aluminum test bar. Across 8 inches is more than acceptable for a worn out lathe.

Ken,

Thank you.

I think I will keep it and not even entertain the thought of upgrading. Maybe take care of the backlash later, still not bad, around 0.007 on the cross slide.

Question:

Do y'all disassemble new chucks, clean them thoroughly, and re-lube before putting them in service?

In the case of this 6J I just grabbed it out of the box, inspected it, exercised the pinions, then mounted it. There is visible lube in the jaw tracks.

Your particular chuck, I think you said it was a Rohm, it should be good out of the box.  Any other Asian made chuck, I would suggest taking apart, cleaning out the grinding grit, lube, put back together.

Ken, Thank you.

Yes, it is a German made Rohm. When I was exercising it, everything felt real good, no gritty feeling and no unusual tight spots. It is tight in a sense that it is well fitted, but it is that way the whole length of the travel.

Good deal Bambam.  I picked up a slightly used 10" Rohm 3-jaw chuck for my 15" Sheldon.  So far, I'm happy with it.  Like yours, works smooth for the full range of jaw movement.

The same number he gave me when I asked him on the side as to what would be the bottom line he will take for the 8 inch.

"Hi i could do $799 for the 8" it is ove a $3000 chuck "

Yep. He said that was 75% off of retail and that he needed to make a profit. Understandable for sure.
There is still something strange about those adds. Where is he getting those chucks and how can he sell them so cheap? I wonder if they are scratch and dent or something but he only ever has the six jaw, at least that is all I've seen him sell. I should check again.
