Clausing 4900 lathe - on it's way out
« on: August 19, 2018, 01:31:43 PM »
I've had this for about 6 years or so.  It's heading down the road soon because I bought a slightly bigger Clausing.  Here's a few photos for posterity sake.  It's been a great machine, but I'm out of space.  Now I have to figure out how to get it out of that corner 8)

I wish I was in a position to buy that machine from you. It is one model I favor highly.
You boys better hold on cause i'm gonna have to stand on it!

Yeah, no kidding... I'd really like a different lathe and that one looks like it may fit in the tight foot print I have for a lathe. Bummer.

I think it's sold already.  Shit, now I gotta move some stuff.

I lucked out and didn't have to move anything to get it out of the corner.  With the handle removed from the mill it just snuck out.

Checking how high the engine hoist will get it to make sure we won't have any problems loading.

How much did you let it go for? If you don't mind me asking? I started perusing around online for a lathe that size yesterday and there is NOTHING within 100 miles right now that's less than 3000... *Sad face*...

Yeah, but that's Canadian money :P  Selling for $1600 to a guy who bought a drill press from me a few months ago.  He told me to let him know if I was ever going to sell a lathe.  It works out great for me because I don't have to post it on craigslist and deal with the no shows or offers of $400 CASH!!!

Ohhh... That seems like a good price too... 😩

Yes, everything is more expensive in Canada. And getting worse. Shipping to Canada is becoming excessive. Too expensive to consider shipping from the states in a lot of cases. Almost makes driving 15 hours mildly reasonable...

Do you follow the auctions on bid spotter?  It's mostly US, but there have been a number of good ones up your way.

I try not to visit auction sites. Wayy too tempting and often a lot of logistics to figure out in short order.
It also makes me extremely weary to buy a piece of machinery sight unseen basically. But, yes, I've seen how great of a deal can be had on auction sites.

That is an excellent price for that machine. How much tooling went with it?

All the basics: 3 and 4 jaw chucks, faceplate, lathe dogs, Yuasa quick change tool post and several tool holders, spare backplate for a chuck, steady rest, chuck depth stop, 1/32 - 1/2" Albrecht chuck

The new lathe doesn't have a quick change tool post but I'd like to try making one.  If I kept this one I'd never do it.

Enough tooling to make that more than a good deal, to me if the machine is in great shape that was a screaming good deal. The price is within a stones throw of a good condition heavily tooled Atlas, but a much better quality machine. So ya screaming good deal!
