Cutting tool holders

Thanks Ken. I was unaware of the Clark tools. I only knew of the Armstrong and Atlas tools.
Also, goodness gracious.. $40 for tools, $44 to ship it. But I need some bigger tool holders if I want to do anything on that shaper aside from face...
I'm gonna look through the ads.

Either that, or I'm sure I could make some, just weld some heavy stuff together. Hell, I could probably make something crude from those forklift bars... I have some pretty beefy blades for the bandsaw at the moment. I was also able to take some small facing cuts on the mill with a 1" face mill before the 2hp motor amped out... I'm sure I could also just weld a tool bit to a fat piece of stock.. gitter done, right...?


I wonder if I should put a 3hp on the Induma.........





I wonder if I should actually just rebuild it already instead of bouncing all over the damn shop from project to project...

My 645 Index mill only has a 1 HP motor and I have no problem hogging metal when thinning down carbide tool holders and D-2 tool steel, along with cutting 4140/45 heat treat. 

Concentrate on fixing just that requiring attention, like the cross-feed screw on the mill.  If you have time to do a little scraping on the slides, do so, but don't overdo it right now.  Your scraping does not have to be perfect.  Concentrate on scraping down on the unworn areas where the slides get tight at each end of it's travel.  Get it where the gibs can be snugged down with some clearance with oil to where when the slide is in the mid-range of travel, you can't rock it back and forth and get .020" movement on the DTI.

What size shank capacity does your shaper have?

Recieved the Armstrong tool holder I found on eBay... Evidently I was unaware of its size...
But the price was definitely right!
It takes a 5/8" tool bit, does not fit in the lantern by a little bit, but I can mill the shank down. Lol, it's a beast, mama!

I know where there is some more, but the shanks are 1" x 2" and probably cost a fortune to ship to you from here!

The old Armstrong tool holders are hard as a nats ass.  Don't think carbide will touch it without crying for help!  They are hard!  May need to do some annealing before trying to cut on it.

Really. I didn't know they were hard. Ya, I could anneal them.
I could probably swing some shipping costs to give it a try?

Carbide should cut them.  We cut hardened steel occasionally not a big deal.   Easy does it on the entry to not chip out. After that it squeals a bit but it cuts.

I can't cut hard stuff with carbide on the small mill, not rigid enough. But the big Induma.... Blah blah blah rebuild, one day, ya ya... Lol.

Oh, I see now. Very interesting. Quite out of my budget at the moment. I had/have several jobs in the shop at the moment making some good profit, I had already spent much of it on shop improvements, IE, the signage.
We will see how next month goes.
