« Last post by chips and more on January 20, 2021, 08:18:31 PM »Thanks guys, all this talk about band saw blades got me going today on making a few for my Delta band saw. I needed 93 1/2” but had to weld smaller lengths together to make it work. And I don’t care about more welds, never been a problem. So for this size blade, in my hobby shop, it’s typical two welds for this length. I could go buy a coil of the stuff but that’s no fun! I use a 4 1/2” right angle grinder to smooth out the weld. The blade welder I have has a little grinding wheel on it that works but I get better results with the angle grinder.

When I found it (for sale) it was on a rack outside with piles of other steel for sale, and if not sold, it was to be scrapped...
At no point did I suspect the "mystery steel" was anything aside from that.. again, I honestly thought it was just cold rolled flat bar.
I'm going to try and salvage what's left of it. If it's still reasonably flat I could utilize it measuring the wear when I rebuild the Induma, which will be soon
The shaper is done, the welding I was doing today was building a gantry crane. It's merely a few hours away from being done. Then I can clean up and start craning the Induma apart since the shaper is done.

I would hope I could tell the difference between a rusted precision tool and a rusted piece of raw stock, but maybe not.
Do you remember what you paid for the piece?
The guy we should be razzing is the one that allowed it to get into bad condition.
I have a 48" precision square. I've never thought of it as potential raw stock, but maybe, in a pinch. LOL

What I find interesting is the Starrett website/catalogue only lists that 380 model up to 72", but this one was definitely at least 96". I had it on a material rack I have on my ceiling and the supports are 94" apart.
