Jacobs used to make and sell chucks with jaws impregnated with carbide particles that would allow you to get a good grip on taps and such.  Never seen them come up second hand on the net or even see one in real life, just in their old catalogs.

Yes, I like the keyed chucks when power tapping also. With the key chuck, I can control the amount of tightness. I want the tap to spin/slip instead of breaking (hopefully).
