Need a Vise?
« on: May 28, 2019, 08:38:28 AM »
A local auction house has a dozen 5" mill vises up for grabs. They want them gone before the next auction.
I'm told they are Moglis (spelling?). Evidently Mogli was the predecessor to Kurt, and these are indistinguishable from Kurts. While I'm curious about the history, I don't need another vise.
Note: I haven't seen them, and I'm not profiting from selling these.
I'm told they are in excellent condition and come with handles, no jaws. Supposedly asking $150. Quite a value!

I don't know if they will ship. But we can ask. Regardless, I'm willing to crate and ship USPS at no charge to MG members.
However, I'd hope you'd throw me a couple bucks for some pine as I'd need to make a trip to the lumber yard.

PM me if you'd like their contact info or if you want me to head over and take some pics. They are a 1/2 hour away so I'd hope you are serious about a possible purchase if you want me to make the run.

I believe it is Moglix and if so, it's made in India.

Copy: Moglix. Thank you!
I'll do some additional online looking. Just because I'm curious.
Again, I've not seen them...

Coincidentally found this today.

"For sale 6" Muggli vise. This company later was bought or became part of Kurt vise. The jaws are held by 4 bolts instead of 2 but otherwise looks just like a Kurt. ....."

I stand corrected, I see the patent info, quite interesting that Kurt didn't design this, they probably bought the patent from Mr Muggli (both brothers)

Kurt did not buy the rights to this vise. I don't think they did.  The patent expired in 1976.  Dad bought one of the Yaussa brand one's in 1978.  I'm not really sure when Kurt started building them.  I want to say around 1980 I don't know for sure.  And there's a very good chance that Yaussa started building them for Kurt at first.  But before 1976, must been built by Muggil?  I sure don't recall ever seeing them advertised in any of the machine tool trade magazines back then.

Notice they were from Minnesota, close to Daryl.

Yes they are from Minnesota, based in Minneapolis. They used to have a facility right here in Jordan and used to hire machinists all the time. It was just a satellite plant, and eventually they moved everything elsewhere. They currently have plants in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Colorado that I know about.

So they are still in business? Under what name? I cannot find Muggli in searches.

Not Muggli. Kurt is based in Minneapolis.

Sorry for the confusion.
