In keeping with the title of this thread,  from one of the ebay ads posted.

Accuracy: 0.000394"

I wondered how they came up with such a number?  Do they just make this up?

0.000394" is equal to 0.010mm.  That's where it comes from.

From the top a chineesum center... not bad actually, I had to add a spacer for ejecting.

A dead center with a carbide tip. Mt3

A very good center that needs rebuilding. I reground the nose, but haven't ordered replacement bearings. 2 standard ball bearings and a tapered roller bearing  in the back.  one side of the front bearing has a shield, and the other is totally open. This bearing is setup for grease filling.  USA

A dead center with tank is hardened . USA

A super hard dead center USA.

A half dead center, used for getting in close and even to face. Hardened, but not super hard. USA

My prized spring loaded live center USA.. wish I knew how to service it. it has what I think is an oil hole mid center, and a removeable set screw end..

no, I use it when I need to get in close, I don't use it for evertyhing.
I would not stick a 8 inch hydraulic shaft on it. but for the stuff I use it for its perfect.

Okay Shawn,

For your benifit, I bought one of those "Chinese" centers with the "stepped" pointy center to try out.  Here is the eBay listing I bought.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/MT2-Live-Center-Morse-Taper-Precision-0-000197-Long-Spindle-Lathe-Tool-CNC-HOT/303248502260?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

I did a test cut using it on my 9" SBL.  I will say, I was over winningly shocked how damn accurate it was and how good it supported the 5/8" diameter shaft I was cutting on.  I took a cut that was about .075" deep, too.

Whine all you want, but for $17 I can throw these away monthly and be happy.  Give one a try.
Oh, your mileage may vary. ;D

Oops!

That listing is sold out.  Try this one.

Here's one a little bit cheaper.

Then maybe I'll give them another chance. But I've been so torn for time between the wife working, her continued schooling, (and the boy), and the new shop build, I haven't had any time on the lathe. I need to run some tests and adjust the tailstock alignment. And install a tang on that center MT somehow, and give it another try

Speaking about the tang, I had the same problem with the one I bought.  Glad I checked it before shoving it into the tailstock quill.  I took a nedymite magnetic had laying around and placed it on the end of the shank.  Worked
perfectly.  In fact, it drew out a bit of very tiny shavings that were collecting on the end of the tailstock screw.

The shank should be soft enough to drill and tap it for a short socket head cap screw placed in the end of the shank.  I had to do that on another live center I have here.  One of these days, I need to make a new tailstock screw and make it about 1/4" longer than the existing one.  Too many "round to its".
